Capital Improvement Update

Posted: Feb 14, 2018

Since 1945, St. Saviour Parish has served families in Deer Park, Dillonvale, and Sycamore Township and educated thousands of grade school students in the Catholic faith.

Our Parish Education Center, now 70 years old, housed our own parish school until its closing in 2002.  In 2003 we were fortunate to secure Linden Grove (a private school for students primarily diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder) as a tenant, while still reserving a portion of the building for use by our own PSR classes.

Even though the structure has been updated in many ways over the years, it still has its original windows (which have become a recurring maintenance item).  To improve the educational environment (and better manage the building’s energy usage and costs) it’s time to replace the windows.

The Parish Staff, Finance Committee, and Pastoral Council have worked hard on this task for the past six months.  After evaluating competitive bids for the project and considering testimonials from area schools and churches who’ve gone through the same process, we’ve selected Gilkey Windows as our vendor.  Gilkey has considerable experience with old school buildings and has worked with us to hold down the overall cost.

Total cost will be $258,000.  This large capital expenditure cannot be covered out of our normal operating budget.  We expect to cover the cost from a combination of parish savings, parishioner bequests, grants, and (potentially) fund raising and/or contributions specifically targeted for the new windows. We’ve already contacted various Charitable Institutions seeking grants to help with the expense, but none have yet been secured.

Replacement of the 48 large school windows will begin on 2/20/2018, so you’ll be seeing activity start in the near future.  If you’d like to see what the new windows look like, a "test" window (with different pane samples) has already been installed in the lower left corner of the building as viewed from the church parking lot.  We’ll be using the upper right (non-reflective) pane on all of the windows.

Linden Grove will operate on a normal schedule while the windows are being replaced.  We’d like to thank the staff and students for their flexibility in working with us on this project.

Feel free to contact Parish Staff or Finance Commission members if you have any questions.
